Skynet

Skynet in the UK MOD's satellite communications system, with the first studies being carried out in the 1960s. The two satellites of the Skynet I series were launched in 1969 and 1970 (the second launch failed). Skynet I ceased to function in 1972. Skynet I was replaced by the more capable Skynet II series in January 1974 and November 1974.

Skynet III never appeared and Skynet IV was developed during the 1980s in the light of the experience of the Falklands War. Skynet IV also covered the Zircon sigint satellite, which was to be launched under the umbrella of a Skynet IV launch.

Zircon was cancelled in 1987 on cost grounds, but three Skynet IV satellites were launched and were used in the 1991 Gulf War. Studies for their replacement, Skynet V, are ongoing.
